Reader's Workshop The basic philosophy behind the Reader's Workshop is to allow students to spend an extended amount of time reading authentic texts that interest them on a daily basis and to provide opportunities to talk about literature. The ultimate goal of a Reading Workshop is always to develop life-long passionate readers.
What We're Learning In this nonfiction unit the text, Plastic Ahoy! Investigating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, will be used as a mentor text to address the Informational Reading Standards addressed. This unit will build upon the previous nonfiction unit! with a review of main idea/ supporting details, text structures, and note-taking. Additional strategies will include! monitoring for significance, identifying author’s opinions/ claims/ arguments, and cross text synthesis.
As part of Magnet/PBL students will research items that homeless shelters are in need of and organize a school wide drive. Students will tally items and create graphs to display number of items collected.
Lexia Core 5 LexiaCore5 is a reading program that your child uses at school. Your child can use Core5 at home with his/her log in information. InCore5, when a student first logs in, an automatic placement tool places the student at the appropriate language comprehension and phonics skill development level. There is an explicit and systematic structure to the student activities as well as embedded scaffolding that allows for differentiated instruction.

ReadTheory is an online reading comprehension assessment tool for students. It allows students to read narrative, informative, or informational literary passages and answer corresponding comprehension questions, while tracking student performance and reporting progress to teachers. It is free for all users.
Reading Homework Students should be spending a significant amount of time reading at home. Twenty to thirty minutes reading each night is essential and will help students reach the benchmark reading level by the end of the school year.
